Images: American propaganda posters from the First World War

During the First World War, posters were commonly used by all sides of the conflict to rally support for the government. The posters would typically appeal to citizens’ sense of loyalty and patriotism.

The United States didn’t enter the war until April 1917, but once they did, the government produced a steady stream of propaganda posters to communicate to ordinary Americans, including one of the most iconic images of the war, that of Uncle Sam exhorting men to join the U.S. army.
