The Medal in Memory of the Patriotic War of 1812 was established in February 1813, following the monumental Russian victory over Napoleon. The medal was created to honor the "fathers and elders" noble families and "having a great and important services" merchants. Nobles wore the Medal on the ribbon of the Order of St. Vladimir, merchants - the tape of the Order of St. Anne.
The inscription on the reverse side of the coin is an indirect quote from
Psalms: "Not to us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name Give the glory of thy mercy and thy truth "(Ps. 113, 9).
